Claims
The lawsuit included allegations of invasion of privacy and assault. Bryan Castellanos claimed that Lt. Fidel Espinoza sent him lewd texts and social media messages. According to Castellanos’ attorney, the messages described Espinoza performing sexual acts and asking for Castellanos’ involvement.
Espinoza allegedly asked Castellanos inappropriate questions about his genitals and requested explicit photos. In April 2018, Espinoza reportedly followed Castellanos into a bathroom and took a photo of him in a compromising position. Defense
The defense claimed that Espinoza and Bryan Castellanos were friends and characterized the messages as harmless “locker room talk.” Before the trial began, Leila Castellanos was removed from the case. Additionally, all defendants except Espinoza were dismissed from the lawsuit.
Jury Verdict
The trial lasted two days, with the jury deliberating for four hours before reaching a decision. On May 29, 2024, the jury awarded Bryan Castellanos a total of $180,000 in damages. This included $120,000 in punitive damages and $60,000 in compensatory damages. Leila Castellanos was not included in the final award.
