Case Background
Ramiro Medina and his wife, Conception Medina, filed a lawsuit following medical treatment Ramiro received starting around October 1, 2020. The couple lived in San Bernardino County, where Ramiro had sought help from several local medical providers. They turned to the legal system after Ramiro suffered significant physical and emotional injuries that they believed were the direct result of poor medical care.
Cause
The lawsuit centered on claims of medical negligence. The Medinas alleged that the doctors and medical facilities involved failed to provide the standard level of care expected in the medical community. They claimed that the providers were careless during the examination, diagnosis, and treatment phases of Ramiro’s care.
Injury
Ramiro Medina suffered injuries to his health, strength, and physical appearance. The complaint noted that the medical treatment caused a shock to his nervous system and resulted in severe, permanent disability. These physical issues led to great mental and physical pain. Additionally, Conception Medina experienced her own loss because of Ramiro’s condition, claiming she lost the companionship, affection, and support of her husband.
Damages Sought
The Plaintiffs asked for several types of financial compensation to cover their losses. They sought general damages for their pain and suffering and asked the Court to cover all past and future medical expenses. Ramiro also requested compensation for lost earnings and the loss of his future ability to work.
Key Arguments and Proceedings
The case moved through the San Bernardino County Superior Court over several years, starting with the initial filing in December 2021. The legal process involved detailed responses from the medical providers and a full trial to determine who was responsible for Ramiro's declining health.

Claims
The Medinas argued that the Defendants were legally responsible for Ramiro's injuries because they had acted as a team. The complaint stated that every doctor, nurse, and technician involved was an agent of the hospitals and facilities, meaning the organizations were responsible for the mistakes of their staff. They specifically focused on the failure to correctly diagnose and treat Ramiro’s underlying medical conditions.
Defense
Dr. Rao V. Daluvoy and the other Defendants fought the charges, denying every allegation of negligence. The defense argued that the Medinas failed to provide enough facts to prove a case. They also suggested that Ramiro's injuries might have been caused by his own failure to take care of himself or by the natural progression of his existing health conditions rather than the medical treatment. Furthermore, the defense claimed that the lawsuit was filed too late and was barred by the statute of limitations.
Jury Verdict
On March 25, 2026, the jury reached a final decision regarding the two primary doctors involved in Ramiro's care. The jury looked at the actions of both Dr. Edwin Espino and Dr. Rao V. Daluvoy to see if they were negligent.
In the case of Dr. Edwin Espino, the jury found that he was not negligent in his diagnosis or treatment of Ramiro Medina. Because the jury decided he had not acted carelessly, they did not have to determine if his actions caused Ramiro any harm or calculate any damages against him.
Regarding Dr. Rao V. Daluvoy, the jury also returned a verdict in his favor. They found that Dr. Daluvoy was not negligent in the care he provided to Ramiro. Following the instructions on the verdict form, once the jury decided that the doctors were not negligent, they stopped their deliberations and did not award any money to the Medinas. The final result was a complete defense verdict, meaning the medical providers were not held responsible for the injuries claimed by the Plaintiffs.
